Originally theorized in the 1880s, the first functioning ultrasound sonogram did not appear until 1940 and was used to detect flaws in metal castings. Scottish obstetrician Dr. Ian Donald is credited as the first to use the technique to measure the size and growth of the fetus during pregnancy beginning in 1958.
